Originally designed in 1949 by Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino, the Protractor Desk stands as a true modernist icon among writing desks. An exploration of the architectural elements that form its structure reveals the full brilliance of this modernist masterpiece.
A 15mm thick tempered glass plate rests on raised stainless steel support buttons, offering an elegant writing surface for the Protractor. Stainless steel bolt sleeves elevate the wooden beams above the slatted cube of 5 drawers. On the opposite side, a 15mm glass panel covers an open-faced pull-out drawer, providing complete transparency. Two steel rods extend from the boomerang beams to support the outer edge of the transparent drawer. This design marvel has been expertly replicated and finished with a stunning, lustrous shine.
Key Features:
Body Materials: Real American Walnut veneer, Natural Oak
Superior Craftsmanship: Manufactured using the same process and materials as the original
Top Surface: 15mm tempered glass
Hardware: Stainless steel
Drawers: 5 drawers with smooth metal glides
Top Drawer: 1 open-face top drawer
Glass: Honed glass edges
Assembly: Two-person assembly required
This revised version is more concise, and it maintains the clarity and flow of the original while enhancing readability.
Styling Suggestions
The Protractor is an architectural masterpiece. The goal is to highlight its structural geometry without cluttering the glass surface.
1. The "Architectural" Workspace
Chair: Pair with a low-profile leather swivel or a classic molded plywood chair to match the mid-century Walnut/Oak tones.
Lighting: Use a slim, matte black desk lamp. The dark, solid texture creates a sharp contrast against the transparent 15mm glass.
Surface: Keep it minimal. Use a single leather blotter or a vintage brass ruler to nod to its "Protractor" drafting heritage.
2. Mastering Transparency
The Floor: Since the desk is clear, the rug becomes part of the design. Use a solid, neutral low-pile rug (Stone, Charcoal, or Cream) to let the "boomerang" legs stand out.
Cable Control: Use adhesive clips along the underside of the wooden beams. In a glass desk, hidden wiring is essential for a clean look.
3. Material Accents
Organic Contrast: Add a concrete-potted succulent. The raw texture softens the precision of the stainless steel hardware.
Open-Face Drawer: Use the glass-covered drawer to display curated stationary or a high-end watch collection rather than daily clutter.
